Re Opportunities for 1L’s to get exposure to trial advocacy
Following is a list of steps, listed chronologically, that 1L’s can take at SCOL to get exposure to TAD (The Advocacy Department) and trial advocacy. IMPORTANT. The following information ONLY regards to mock trial, this does NOT include information regarding moot court. The Moot Court Board webpage will have a listing of all of the moot court competitions.
SEPTEMBER Explore the STLA – the Student Trial Lawyers Association. This is a student-run organization that usually attracts very large numbers of 1L students for whom this is their first exposure to mock trial. The STLA offers three (3) rounds of mock trial in the fall for 1L’s. Teams of 3 or 4 1L’s present one side of the case for all 3 rounds, and they are assisted by an STLA coach (or coaches) who are upper classmen.
Be A Hoffman Cup Witness. The Hoffman Cup is SCOL’s “crown jewel” mock trial tournament. In 2013 the tournament is November 1, 2, 3. 1L’s cannot compete as advocates in the Cup, but they can volunteer to serve as a witness for a squad that is competing. The Championship Round is on Tuesday 5 November 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. It is open for all to observe. So come to see the school’s best advocates. A few ways to find upperclassmen needing witnesses is to contact National Trial Team members or STLA. You can also contact the Moot Court Board to be added to a list of witness volunteers (contact info TBA)
OCTOBER Participate in STLA rounds. If you missed the opportunity to sign up as an advocate, offer to witness for one of the teams
NOVEMBER Serve as a witness and/or observe the Hoffman Rounds. (See above for dates and times.)
JANUARY Sign-Up for the Advocates Cup. Teams can be comprised of 2 or 4 students. There must be one 1L student for every upperclassman on the team, and a 1L MUST serve as counsel for each side of the case.
