Mission Statement
The University of Denver College of Law Moot Court Board is dedicated to providing students the highest quality legal scenarios presented under the most realistic conditions possible. The Board manages and produces six legal competitions per academic year including negotiations, trial, appellate, client counseling, international appellate and motions competitions.

Negotiations Competition
Fall Semester – Saturday, September 24, 2011

The ABA Law Student Division’s Negotiation Competition promotes greater interest and exposure among law students into legal negotiation and provides a means for law students to practice and improve their negotiating skills. The competition simulates legal negotiations in which students, acting as lawyers, negotiate a series of legal problems. The simulations consist of a common set of facts known by all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing their respective sides.

Daniel S. Hoffman Trial Advocacy Competition
Fall Semester – Friday, October 28, 2011-Sunday, October 30, 2011 Final Round, Thursday, November 3, 2011

Hoffman is one of the most popular moot court competitions. The four-day trial competition is open to all 2L, 3L, and 4L day and evening students. Hoffman tests each two-person team’s oral advocacy skills through all phases of a trial, including opening and closing arguments and examination of witnesses, in a time constrained environment. The final round is held in front of a panel of distinguished Colorado judges.

Ved P. Nanda International Appellate Competition
Saturday, February 18th, 2012

The International Appellate Advocacy Competition is open to individual participants of any year interested in international law and appellate advocacy. Individual competitors simulate representing nations before the International Court of Justice and are judged by local attorneys and judges who specialize in this field. The top competitors will qualify as candidates for the Jessup traveling team

Client Counseling Competition
Spring Semester – Saturday, January 21, 2012

The ABA Law Student Division’s Client Counseling Competition simulates a law office consultation in which law students, acting as attorneys, are presented with a client matter. The students conduct an interview with a person playing the role of the client and then explain how they would proceed further in the hypothetical situation. The focus is on the competitors’ ability to negotiate the most advantageous settlement for their client(s), given the circumstances and facts provided. Competitors are scored on professionalism and ethics, as well as their style and negotiating strategy.

Peter H. Holme, Jr. Barrister’s Cup Appellate Advocacy Competition
Fall Semester – Friday, March 9, 2012-Sunday, March 11,2012 (Briefs due Wednesday, February 29, 2012)

Barrister’s Cup is one of the largest competitions of the year. This is an excellent opportunity for first year students to practice their oral advocacy skills. Barrister’s Cup is a team competition, where the two team members draft a brief for an appellee or appellant and then present an oral argument to a judge. The competitors’ briefs and trial advocacy skills are factored into a final score. Additional awards are given for exceptional oral advocacy skills and for the best brief written. The final round is held in front of a panel of distinguished Colorado judges.

Hon. Phillip S. Figa Motions Competition
Fall Semester – Saturday, April 7, 2012-Sunday, April 8, 2012

The Hon. Phillip S. Figa Motions Competition is an individual competition open to all day and evening students. The competition tests students’ oral advocacy skills. Students present an argument in support of their motion in front of local judges and lawyers.
